CWE-79

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can inject persistent malicious scripts into pages, executing arbitrary JavaScript in the browsers of visiting users and admins. The attack only requires network access to any page rendering the review form.

Root cause

The plugin fails to sanitize and escape the 'saswp_review_text' parameter while exposing the authorization nonce directly in the public shortcode output.

Affected systems

Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP plugin for WordPress up to and including version 1.67

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N

Fix & remediation

Upgrade the plugin to a version newer than 1.67. If patching immediately is not possible, disable the plugin or remove the [saswp-reviews-form] shortcode from all published pages.

shell
$ wp plugin update schema-and-structured-data-for-wp

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

The Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'saswp_review_text' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.67 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The nonce that serves as the only authorization gate is publicly printed in the [saswp-reviews-form] shortcode HTML, making it obtainable by any anonymous visitor and rendering it ineffective as an access control boundary.
