- CWE-617
Impact
Authenticated users with readWrite privileges can crash the mongos process and cause a denial of service for all routed traffic. The attacker needs network access and valid database credentials with readWrite permissions.
Root cause
An internal aggregation stage lacks authorization checks, allowing subsequent stages to execute unexpectedly on the router and trigger an unhandled fatal abort.
Affected systems
Versions not listed — check the vendor advisory.
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade mongos once the fixed version is released in SERVER-130431. As an interim workaround, restrict or revoke readWrite permissions from untrusted accounts and monitor query pipelines for internal aggregation stages.
AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
A security issue was discovered in MongoDB mongos (the sharded cluster router) where an authenticated user with readWrite privileges could crash the mongos process by crafting a specially formed aggregation pipeline. The issue leverages an internal aggregation stage that lacks proper authorization checks despite being intended for internal use, allowing a subsequent stage to be forced to execute on the router under conditions it was not designed to handle. This results in an unhandled fatal error that causes the mongos process to immediately abort, resulting in denial of service for all clients routed through the affected mongos instance.
