Impact
Remote attackers can crash services or applications rendering subtitles, causing a denial of service. They need to supply a malicious subtitle file or stream to the target application.
Root cause
A bug in ass_outline_construct() inside libass/ass_render.c causes a crash when parsing crafted subtitle outlines.
Affected systems
libass 0.17.5
Fix & remediation
Upgrade to a fixed release containing pull request #955 once published by upstream or your distribution. If patching must wait, avoid rendering untrusted ASS/SSA subtitle files.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade libass9AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
