CWE-416

Impact

A malicious HTTP/2 server can cause memory corruption, denial of service, or potential code execution when a client uploads data to it. The attacker needs the curl client to connect and upload to a server they control.

Root cause

curl mishandles server-sent HTTP/2 RST_STREAM frames containing HTTP_1_1_REQUIRED or REFUSED_STREAM during uploads, causing a use-after-free on a struct Curl_easy object.

Affected systems

Versions not listed — check the vendor advisory.

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade curl and libcurl to the patched release specified in the curl advisory, or restrict connections to HTTP/1.1 via --http1.1 to avoid the vulnerable HTTP/2 upload handling if patching must wait.

shell
$ curl --version

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
