- CWE-787, CWE-1284
Impact
Attackers can gain arbitrary code execution by hijacking the FX_MEDIA driver callback via an out-of-bounds heap write. They need the target system to mount a maliciously crafted FAT image with fault tolerance enabled.
Root cause
Improper bounds checking during fault-tolerance log replay leads to an attacker-controlled heap overwrite.
Affected systems
Eclipse ThreadX FileX; versions not listed — check the vendor advisory.
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
Fix & remediation
Check the vendor advisory for patch availability. As an interim workaround, disable the FileX fault tolerance feature or avoid mounting untrusted FAT media.
AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Mounting an attacker-controlled FAT image with fault tolerance enabled causes an out-of-bounds heap write during log replay. The write is attacker-positioned and attacker-valued, and on a common embedded memory layout it reaches the FX_MEDIA driver callback, giving control of the instruction pointer.
