- CWE-416
Impact
Authenticated low-privileged attackers can trigger remote code execution or crash the server. They only need standard database credentials to open multiple cursors and fetch from them.
Root cause
Reallocating the SYS_REFCURSOR array leaves stale memory pointers inside routine execution contexts, leading to a use-after-free upon fetch.
Affected systems
MariaDB server versions 12.3.1 through versions prior to 12.3.3, and versions prior to 13.0.2.
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade to MariaDB 12.3.3 or 13.0.2. No interim configuration workaround is provided, so restrict untrusted user access until the upgrade is complete.
$ mariadb --versionAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 12.3.1 until 12.3.3 and 13.0.2, SYS_REFCURSOR handling is affected because cursor-array reallocation can leave stale references in routine contexts. A low-privileged attacker can open a large number of SYS_REFCURSORs and then fetch one to trigger a use-after-free that can enable remote code execution when combined with another vulnerability. This issue is fixed in versions 12.3.3 and 13.0.2.
