Impact
A read-only Canopy user can bypass permission boundaries and send unauthorized write or administrative requests via the monitoring proxy. They only need low-privilege read access to Canopy and a reachable monitoring target.
Root cause
Incomplete authorization checks in the experimental Canopy role and monitoring-proxy features allow read-only roles to proxy non-read requests.
Affected systems
Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB 0.11.0 before 0.11.1
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB to version 0.11.1. If patching must wait, disable the experimental Canopy monitoring-proxy feature or isolate the reachable monitoring target.

Under a non-default configuration with a readonly Canopy user and a reachable monitoring target, that user can send non-read requests through the monitoring proxy. This issue affects Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB: from 0.11.0 before 0.11.1. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 0.11.1, which fixes the issue.
