- CWE-74
Impact
Authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher can execute arbitrary PHP code on the server and fully compromise the site. Attackers need a valid low-privileged account to trigger the vulnerable mail test function.
Root cause
The send_test_mail() function lacks proper authorization checks and input sanitization, allowing arbitrary PHP code to be written directly to executable files inside the uploads directory.
Affected systems
Email Customizer for WooCommerce (Pro) plugin for WordPress versions up to and including 3.9.5
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade the plugin to a version newer than 3.9.5. If patching immediately is not possible, deactivate the Email Customizer for WooCommerce (Pro) plugin or block subscriber access to administrative AJAX endpoints.
$ wp plugin update mail-customizer-for-woocommerce-proAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
The Email Customizer for WooCommerce (Pro) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Remote Code Execution in versions up to, and including, 3.9.5. This is due to insufficient authorization and input sanitization in the send_test_mail() function, which allows user-controlled PHP code to be written to executable files in the uploads directory. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to execute arbitrary PHP code on the server, leading to full site compromise.
