CWE-79

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can inject persistent web scripts that execute in visitors' browsers when viewing infected pages. Attackers only need network access to the webhook endpoint, provided the plugin has logging enabled.

Root cause

The 'dg_thumber_webhook' action request body is logged and displayed without sufficient input sanitization and output escaping.

Affected systems

Document Gallery plugin for WordPress versions up to and including 5.1.1

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N

Fix & remediation

Disable logging under the Document Gallery plugin's Advanced settings (and ensure WP_DEBUG is false in wp-config.php) to immediately block exploitation, or deactivate the plugin until a fixed release is available.

shell
$ wp plugin deactivate document-gallery

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

The Document Gallery plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'dg_thumber_webhook' Action Request Body in all versions up to, and including, 5.1.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that logging be enabled in the plugin's Advanced settings, which is only the default state when WP_DEBUG is true; otherwise an administrator must manually enable it.
