Impact
An attacker can achieve arbitrary code execution or crash the application under the running user's context. This requires tricking a user into opening or previewing a malicious PowerVR (.pvr) file.
Root cause
An integer overflow in the file-pvr plug-in miscalculates buffer sizes for image dimensions, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.

Fix & remediation
Update GIMP once patched packages are available from your distribution. As an interim workaround, delete or remove execute permissions on the file-pvr plug-in binary to disable .pvr file handling.
$ sudo chmod 000 /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/file-pvr/file-pvr 2>/dev/null || sudo chmod 000 /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/file-pvr/file-pvrAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
A flaw was found in GIMP. An integer overflow occurs in the file-pvr plug-in when calculating memory buffer sizes for image dimensions. By tricking a user into opening or previewing a specially crafted PowerVR (.pvr) file, an attacker can trigger a heap-based buffer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution or a Denial of Service (DoS) via an application crash.
