Impact
A local attacker can achieve privilege escalation and run arbitrary code if an administrator executes a vulnerable installer from an insecure folder. The attacker needs local access and write permissions to the installer's execution directory.
Root cause
The installer engine searches insecure, user-writable directories to locate and execute Setup Prerequisites instead of enforcing trusted paths.
Affected systems
Revenera InstallShield version 2025 R2 and earlier.

Fix & remediation
Upgrade to a fixed InstallShield release or hotfix referenced in the Revenera advisory. As an immediate workaround, only execute Setup.exe and installers from secure, write-protected directories (such as System32 or an admin-only folder).
AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
A potential privilege escalation issue was identified in InstallShield version 2025 R2 and earlier when running compressed Basic MSI setup with Prerequisites from an insecure location. If a local administrator launches a compressed Setup.exe with Prerequisites from an unsecured location, the Prerequisite installers also might load from an unsecured location, potentially leading to privilege escalation.
