CWE-22

Impact

Remote Tox contacts can achieve arbitrary code execution by writing files to the victim's filesystem. They need an accepted contact relationship and the victim must have auto-accept file transfers enabled.

Root cause

The application fails to sanitize incoming file transfer paths against directory traversal sequences like '../' or absolute paths before saving files.

Affected systems

uTox through 0.18.1

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade uTox to a version containing pull requests 1602/1603 once released. As an immediate mitigation, disable the auto-accept file transfers setting in the client configuration.

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

uTox through 0.18.1 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows Tox friends to write arbitrary files by sending absolute or ../ file names to victims with auto-accept enabled. Attackers can overwrite shell startup files or plant crafted .ftinfo resume records that ft_find_resumeable() loads, abusing FILE pointers to write /proc/self/mem and execute code.
