Impact
Attackers can execute arbitrary commands on the host by supplying a specially crafted filename and argument file to the EPS parser. They need the ability to control the input filename passed to Pillow and control a referenced argument file on disk.
Root cause
EpsImagePlugin fails to sanitize or convert input filenames into safe absolute paths before passing them to Ghostscript, allowing filenames starting with hyphens or '@' to be interpreted as command-line options.
Affected systems
Pillow 2.6.0 through versions prior to 13.0.0

Fix & remediation
Upgrade Pillow to version 13.0.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable EPS handling or validate and reject EPS filenames starting with '-' or '@'.
$ pip install --upgrade 'pillow>=13.0.0'AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 2.6.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow is vulnerable to argument injection when invoking Ghostscript for EPS input. EpsImagePlugin.Ghostscript passes a caller-controlled input filename after -f without converting it to a safe absolute path, so a name beginning with a hyphen can be interpreted as a Ghostscript option. An attacker who controls the filename can inject Ghostscript arguments. Arbitrary command execution specifically requires a leading @ argument-file filename and control of the referenced text file containing additional Ghostscript arguments; the reported chain reproduces with the default -dSAFER invocation. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
