- CWE-409
Impact
Remote attackers can crash services via out-of-memory denial of service by uploading a small crafted MSP image. No authentication or user interaction is required if the app processes untrusted images.
Root cause
The MSP RLE decoder writes unpacked output to a BytesIO buffer without bounding expansion to the image's declared dimensions, bypassing decompression-bomb checks.
Affected systems
Pillow 4.1.0 before 13.0.0

Fix & remediation
Upgrade Pillow to version 13.0.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, reject or strip MSP format images before processing.
$ pip install --upgrade 'pillow>=13.0.0'AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 4.1.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow's MSP RLE decoder can expand a small file into an unbounded in-memory buffer. The decoder writes run-length output to BytesIO without limiting expansion to the declared image size. An attacker can supply a crafted MSP image to an application that loads its pixels. This can exhaust memory and deny service even when the declared pixel count passes the decompression-bomb check. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
