Impact
Unauthenticated remote attackers can crash the Fleet server by exhausting its memory. They only need network access to send gzip-compressed requests to unauthenticated endpoints.
Root cause
The server performs unbounded decompression on gzip-encoded request bodies, leading to memory exhaustion via decompression bombs.
Affected systems
Fleet before 4.83.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade Fleet to version 4.83.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, drop or reject requests containing 'Content-Encoding: gzip' at your reverse proxy or load balancer.
$ fleet versionAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Fleet before 4.83.0 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to exhaust server memory by sending gzip-compressed request bodies. Attackers can send small, highly compressed requests with Content-Encoding: gzip to unauthenticated endpoints that expand during decoding, crashing the entire Fleet instance.
