- CWE-787
Impact
Remote unauthenticated attackers can corrupt heap memory and crash FreeRDP servers or potentially alter execution state. They only need network access to send a malformed NTLM authentication message.
Root cause
The server hash-callback NTLM parsing logic fails to validate the MIC offset, allowing a negative offset to overwrite 16 zero bytes outside the allocated heap buffer.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 2.0.0 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade to FreeRDP 3.32.0 or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, restrict network access to the FreeRDP server port via firewall to trusted sources.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11 freerdp2-shadow-x11 libfreerdp-server2-2AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP versions from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 contain a heap out-of-bounds write in the server hash-callback NTLM path that fails to validate the MIC offset. Unauthenticated attackers can send a crafted AUTHENTICATE_MESSAGE with a backward session-key offset and MIC offset to write 16 zero bytes beyond the allocation.
