CWE-307

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can take over accounts by brute-forcing 6-digit SMS or email verification codes. The attacker only needs network access and a target user's phone number or email address.

Root cause

The application never expires, invalidates, or rate-limits attempts against generated 6-digit verification codes across login and password reset endpoints.

Affected systems

Course-tencent-cloud through 2.0.1

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N

Fix & remediation

No fixed version is listed. Block or rate-limit requests to the password reset and verify login endpoints at your reverse proxy or WAF, or restrict access to the application until code fixes are deployed.

NVD description

Course-tencent-cloud through 2.0.1 contains an improper restriction of authentication attempts vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to brute force 6-digit SMS/email verification codes, which are never invalidated or attempt-limited. Attackers who know a victim's phone or email can trigger a code and rotate source IPs against the password reset and verify login endpoints to take over accounts.
