Impact
A local attacker can crash FreeRDP or execute arbitrary code under the client user account. They need local file access and must convince a user to load a maliciously crafted persistent cache v2 file.
Root cause
An integer wraparound in bitmap size calculation inside persistent_cache_read_entry_v2 leads to mismatched entry size accounting and a heap buffer overflow during fixed 16 KiB reads.
Affected systems
FreeRDP prior to version 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable or avoid loading untrusted persistent cache files.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP before 3.32.0 contains a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in persistent_cache_read_entry_v2 that allows local attackers to corrupt heap memory via integer wraparound in bitmap size calculation. Attackers can craft a persistent cache v2 file with oversized width and height values that causes mismatched entry size accounting and fixed 16 KiB reads, leading to crashes or code execution when loaded.
