Weakness
CWE-789

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can crash the Dragonfly service and cause a complete denial of service. They only need network access to send a single command with a large negative count.

Root cause

The server performs unbounded memory allocation when handling negative COUNT arguments in HRANDFIELD, ZRANDMEMBER, and SRANDMEMBER commands, triggering the OOM killer.

Affected systems

Dragonfly through 2.0.2

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade to a version newer than 2.0.2 when available. As an interim workaround, restrict network access to the Dragonfly port or disable/rename the vulnerable commands (HRANDFIELD, ZRANDMEMBER, SRANDMEMBER) via configuration or ACLs.

shell
$ dragonfly --version

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

Dragonfly through 2.0.2 contains an unbounded memory allocation vulnerability that allows unauthenticated clients to exhaust memory by passing a negative COUNT to HRANDFIELD, ZRANDMEMBER or SRANDMEMBER. Attackers can send a single command against a one-element key with a huge negative COUNT to trigger the OOM killer, terminating the instance for all clients.
