CWE-122

Impact

A malicious RDP server can crash the connecting FreeRDP client by streaming crafted MP3 audio over rdpsnd. An attacker needs a rogue or compromised RDP server that the target client connects to.

Root cause

A heap-based buffer overflow occurs in freerdp_dsp_decode_mp3 because byte offsets are mishandled as short elements when calculating the right-channel PCM pointer.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 (when built with WITH_LAME=ON and WITH_DSP_FFMPEG=OFF)

Fix & remediation

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or newer. As an interim mitigation, rebuild with WITH_DSP_FFMPEG=ON or disable audio redirection by running clients with /sound:sys:off.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11

NVD description

FreeRDP 2.0.0 before 3.32.0, when built with WITH_LAME=ON and WITH_DSP_FFMPEG=OFF, has a heap-based buffer overflow in freerdp_dsp_decode_mp3 because the right-channel PCM pointer is offset by a byte count treated as short elements. A malicious RDP server can send MP3 audio over rdpsnd so decoded samples cross the heap allocation, crashing the client.
