- CWE-59
Impact
Unauthenticated attackers can read arbitrary server files up to 10 MB with the permissions of the service user. They only need network access to submit a malicious repository's symlink blob URL.
Root cause
The ingest_query single-file blob ingestion improperly follows symbolic links without validating target paths.
Affected systems
Gitingest through 0.3.1
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade Gitingest to a patched version beyond 0.3.1 when available; as an interim workaround, restrict outbound repository cloning or restrict the service user's filesystem access permissions.
$ pip show gitingestAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Gitingest through 0.3.1 contains a symlink following vulnerability in ingest_query single-file blob ingestion that allows unauthenticated attackers to read server files by submitting symlink blob URLs. Attackers can commit a symlink to a public repository and submit its blob URL, causing the server to return any file the service user can read, up to 10 MB.
