Weakness
CWE-78

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary shell commands with the privileges of the Python application process. This requires only passing an untrusted file path containing shell metacharacters into the generate_thumbnail function, such as via an uploaded file.

Root cause

The generate_thumbnail function directly interpolates unvalidated file paths into os.system calls executing ffmpeg, convert, or unoconv.

Affected systems

thumbnail Python package through version 1.5

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Fix & remediation

No fixed version is published yet; either sanitize file paths by stripping shell metacharacters before calling generate_thumbnail, or remove the package and invoke subprocess.run with argument lists instead.

shell
$ pip show thumbnail

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

The thumbnail Python package through 1.5 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in generate_thumbnail() that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying shell metacharacters in file paths. Attackers who control a file name passed to generate_thumbnail, such as an uploaded file, can inject commands into os.system() calls running ffmpeg, convert or unoconv with the Python process privileges.
