Weakness
CWE-1188

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can execute arbitrary commands as root on managed hosts by sending requests to Periphery agents. They only need network reachability to port 8120.

Root cause

The agent authentication fails open by default when core_public_keys and passkeys lists are left empty.

Affected systems

Komodo through 2.3.3

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade to a fixed version newer than 2.3.3 once available; immediately populate non-empty values for core_public_keys and passkeys in periphery.config.toml, or block incoming traffic to port 8120.

shell
$ sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8120 -j DROP

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

Komodo through 2.3.3 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in the Periphery agent that allows unauthenticated attackers to connect as a trusted Core because empty core_public_keys and passkeys lists fail open by default. Attackers reaching port 8120 can present any generated keypair to issue Periphery API requests, including terminal sessions and container operations, executing commands on managed hosts typically as root.
