CWE-415

Impact

Attackers can crash applications or cause heap corruption and potential code execution by tricking a user or service into processing a crafted media file. They need local file access or the ability to submit input to tools consuming L-SMASH.

Root cause

Error handling in importer/nalu_imp.c improperly frees borrowed codec-specific objects when processing streams that lack a parseable SPS, triggering a double free.

Affected systems

L-SMASH through 2.14.5

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H

Fix & remediation

No fixed release is documented; avoid processing untrusted media files with L-SMASH, boxdumper, muxer, or remuxer until an upstream patch is available.

NVD description

L-SMASH through 2.14.5 contains a double free vulnerability in hevc_setup_first_summary() and h264_setup_first_summary() in importer/nalu_imp.c that frees borrowed codec-specific objects on error paths. Attackers can supply a crafted Annex-B elementary stream lacking a parseable SPS to lsmash_read_file() or the boxdumper, remuxer, or muxer tools, causing use-after-free, heap corruption, and crashes.
