Impact
Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary OS commands as root on the router. They only need network access to the web management interface to send a malicious HTTP request.
Root cause
The HNAP CGI handler in /htdocs/cgibin directly passes unsanitized input from the SOAPACTION HTTP header to the system shell function.
Affected systems
D-Link DIR-868L version 2.01b05
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H
Fix & remediation
No patched firmware version is listed; replace the end-of-life router or restrict all incoming access to the web management interface and HNAP endpoints via upstream firewalling.
