- CWE-190
Impact
Attackers can achieve an out-of-bounds write and potentially compromise system integrity or crash the evaluator by feeding untrusted expressions into Nix or Lix. They need to supply an untrusted Nix expression to a system evaluating it without authentication.
Root cause
An integer overflow during list allocation causes an out-of-bounds write while evaluating expressions.
Affected systems
Nix before 2.35.3 and Lix before 2.95.4
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:H/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade Nix to version 2.35.3 or later, or Lix to version 2.95.4 or later. If updating immediately is not possible, stop evaluating untrusted Nix expressions.
$ nix --versionAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Nix before 2.35.3 and Lix before 2.95.4 have an integer overflow and resultant out-of-bounds write when evaluating untrusted expressions because list allocation is mishandled.
