CWE-522

Impact

A malicious RDP server or man-in-the-middle attacker can steal cleartext administrative credentials. The attacker needs the victim to initiate an RDP connection using FreeRDP's Restricted Admin mode.

Root cause

The /restricted-admin flag fails to suppress CredSSP delegation, leaking TSPasswordCreds and Client Info PDUs containing plaintext passwords to the destination server.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N

Fix & remediation

Upgrade to FreeRDP 3.32.0 or later. As an interim workaround, do not connect to untrusted or unverified RDP hosts relying on /restricted-admin for credential protection.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11 freerdp3-x11

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an insufficiently protected credentials vulnerability where the /restricted-admin option fails to suppress CredSSP credential delegation, sending the cleartext password to the RDP server. A compromised or man-in-the-middle destination host can decode TSPasswordCreds and the Client Info PDU to obtain reusable administrative domain, username, and password values.
