Impact
A malicious RDP server or man-in-the-middle attacker can steal the user's cleartext password. The attacker must intercept or terminate a client connection to force a protocol downgrade.
Root cause
The negotiation response handler fails to verify that server-selected RDSTLS or HYBRID_EX protocols match the client's enabled protocol set, bypassing NLA enforcement.
Affected systems
FreeRDP client 3.0.0 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or higher. No interim mitigation is documented; avoid connecting to untrusted RDP endpoints until upgraded.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11 freerdp3-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
The FreeRDP client 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 does not check a server-selected PROTOCOL_RDSTLS or PROTOCOL_HYBRID_EX against its enabled protocol set in nego_process_negotiation_response(), allowing a security protocol downgrade. A malicious server or man-in-the-middle can select RDSTLS to override /sec:nla pinning, complete authentication with an all-zero cookie, and receive the user's cleartext password in the Client Info PDU.
