Impact
A malicious RDP server can read up to 66,560 bytes of uninitialized client heap memory. To trigger this, an attacker must convince a user running the vulnerable client to connect to their rogue server.
Root cause
smartcard_Transmit_Call handles invalid card handles with nonzero receive lengths incorrectly, prompting smartcard_pack_transmit_return to serialize and leak uninitialized heap memory.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable smartcard device redirection in your client connection configurations.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP from 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an uninitialized memory disclosure vulnerability in smartcard_Transmit_Call that allows malicious RDP servers to read client memory. Servers can send SCardTransmit requests with an invalid card handle and nonzero receive length, causing smartcard_pack_transmit_return to serialize up to 66,560 uninitialized heap bytes.
