Impact
A malicious RDP server can crash your client process via heap corruption when a user connects. The attacker needs control of the remote RDP server and requires the user to initiate a connection with smartcard redirection enabled.
Root cause
A race condition in smartcard emulation allows concurrent SCARD_IOCTL_DISCONNECT and SCARD_IOCTL_TRANSMIT requests on the same handle, causing a heap use-after-free.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If you cannot patch immediately, disable smartcard redirection in client connection profiles.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains a heap use-after-free vulnerability in smartcard emulation when SCARD_IOCTL_DISCONNECT and SCARD_IOCTL_TRANSMIT operate concurrently on one card handle. A malicious RDP server can overlap these IRPs through separate context workers to free and reuse the SCardHandle, causing client-process heap corruption and termination.
