CWE-476

Impact

A malicious or compromised RD Gateway can crash connecting FreeRDP clients via a denial-of-service attack. The attacker needs an RD Gateway under their control and a user who initiates a connection to it.

Root cause

The function rdg_process_control_packet accepts header-only close channel packets and forwards a null payload to rdg_process_close_packet without validating it, triggering a NULL pointer dereference.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 2.3.0 before 3.32.0

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, avoid connecting to untrusted or unverified RD Gateways.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

FreeRDP 2.3.0 before 3.32.0 dereferences a NULL stream in rdg_process_close_packet in libfreerdp/core/gateway/rdg.c because rdg_process_control_packet accepts a header-only PKT_TYPE_CLOSE_CHANNEL packet and passes the null payload without a check. A malicious or compromised RD Gateway can send an eight-byte CLOSE_CHANNEL header to crash a connecting FreeRDP client.
