Impact
A rogue RD Gateway can permanently freeze the FreeRDP client decoder thread, causing a denial of service. The attacker needs a user to initiate a connection to a malicious gateway.
Root cause
The http_chuncked_read function enters an infinite loop handling zero-byte reads when a server closes the TLS connection mid-stream during an incomplete chunk-size line or footer.
Affected systems
FreeRDP from 2.3.0 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. As an interim workaround, do not connect to untrusted or unverified RD Gateways.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP from 2.3.0 before 3.32.0 contains an infinite loop vulnerability in http_chuncked_read that allows malicious RD Gateways to hang clients by sending incomplete chunked responses. Attackers can send a partial chunk-size line or footer followed by a clean TLS shutdown, causing zero-byte reads to loop forever and freeze the client decoder thread.
