CWE-787

Impact

A malicious or compromised ARM routing service can crash the FreeRDP client when a user types into the credential prompt. The attacker needs to control the routing service and trick a user into connecting and entering credentials.

Root cause

The freerdp_interruptible_get_line function shrinks its input buffer to 32 bytes but preserves the length of an oversized suggested username as the write offset, triggering a heap out-of-bounds write.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 3.18.0 before 3.32.0

Fix & remediation

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. No interim workaround is documented; avoid connecting to untrusted ARM routing services until patched.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11

NVD description

FreeRDP 3.18.0 before 3.32.0 has a heap-based out-of-bounds write in freerdp_interruptible_get_line, which shrinks the buffer to 32 bytes while keeping a pre-filled suggested username's length as its write offset. A malicious or compromised ARM routing service can return a long redirectedUsername that reaches the CLI credential prompt, crashing the client when the user types input.
