Impact
A malicious or compromised ARM gateway can crash connecting FreeRDP clients, causing a denial of service. The attacker needs to control the configured ARM endpoint and have a client initiate a connection to it.
Root cause
The arm_handle_request_ok function dereferences a NULL pointer by passing it to strnlen when receiving an empty HTTP 200 response body.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 3.0.0-beta4 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, do not connect to untrusted or compromised ARM gateways.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP 3.0.0-beta4 before 3.32.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference in arm_handle_request_ok when an ARM endpoint returns an empty HTTP 200 body. Attackers controlling the configured ARM gateway can return a zero-length body to pass NULL to strnlen and crash the connecting client.
