CWE-862

Impact

Authenticated low-privileged users can send arbitrary SMS messages impersonating the company. An attacker only needs network access and a valid account on the instance.

Root cause

The whitelisted send_sms API endpoint fails to verify caller authorization before sending SMS messages.

Affected systems

Frappe Framework before 15.120.0 and 16.x before 16.33.0

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N

Fix & remediation

Upgrade Frappe Framework to version 15.120.0, 16.33.0, or later. If upgrading must wait, disable SMS gateway integrations or restrict the send_sms whitelisted method via custom server scripts.

shell
$ bench update --apps frappe

NVD description

Frappe Framework before 15.120.0 and 16.x before 16.33.0 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the whitelisted send_sms API endpoint, which does not verify that the caller is permitted to send SMS messages. Users lacking the required permissions can invoke send_sms to send arbitrary SMS messages that impersonate the Company.
