Impact
A malicious remote repository can crash the git client and abort clone or fetch operations. An attacker needs a user to attempt a clone or fetch from their untrusted server.
Root cause
The pack header decoder allows version 3, but an active assert_eq! macro enforces version 2, causing an unhandled panic on unexpected header versions.
Affected systems
gitoxide gix-pack before 0.75.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade gix-pack to version 0.75.0 or later. If upgrading is delayed, avoid fetching from or cloning untrusted remote repositories.
$ cargo update -p gix-pack --precise 0.75.0AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
gitoxide gix-pack before 0.75.0 contains a reachable assertion in BytesToEntriesIter::new_from_header: the pack header decoder accepts version 3, but a release-enabled assert_eq! requires version 2. A malicious remote can send a 12-byte pack header declaring version 3 to panic the client and abort the clone or fetch.
