CWE-20

Impact

Authenticated remote attackers can crash the vLLM API process, causing denial of service. They need network access and valid credentials to submit requests to the audio transcriptions endpoint.

Root cause

vLLM passes uploaded audio files directly to PyAV/FFmpeg av.open() with only a file-size check, triggering an underlying heap overflow in FFmpeg's IAMF parser.

Affected systems

vLLM before 0.29.0

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade vLLM to version 0.29.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, block or restrict access to the /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint.

shell
$ pip install --upgrade 'vllm>=0.29.0'

NVD description

vLLM before 0.29.0 passes uploaded audio to the PyAV/FFmpeg av.open() fallback with only a file-size check, exposing FFmpeg's IAMF parser heap overflow. Authenticated remote attackers can repeatedly upload malformed IAMF containers to /v1/audio/transcriptions, corrupting the heap and crashing the API process.
