- CWE-400
Impact
Authenticated users can crash Open WebUI workers and freeze the application by triggering high-memory regex operations. Attackers only need basic network access and a valid account to issue the search queries.
Root cause
The knowledge and chat file search features compile user-supplied regex patterns with unbounded nested repetition expansion and cache the bloated results.
Affected systems
Open WebUI 0.11.0 before 0.11.4
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade Open WebUI to version 0.11.4 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable the grep_knowledge_files tool or restrict access to untrusted users.
$ pip install --upgrade open-webui>=0.11.4AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
Open WebUI 0.11.0 before 0.11.4 compiles user-chosen grep patterns for its knowledge and chat file search tools with a regex engine that expands nested counted repetition unbounded at compile time and caches the result. Authenticated users can have the model call grep_knowledge_files with short nested-repetition patterns, blocking the event loop and exhausting worker memory.
