Impact
A local attacker with low privileges can crash the process to cause a denial of service. They need the ability to make ImageMagick write an image in a compressed format using the affected encoders.
Root cause
A type confusion flaw passes an unexpected pointer type to an internal method when writing compressed images in the INFO, JSON, and YAML encoders.
Affected systems
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade to ImageMagick 6.9.13-57 or 7.1.2-32 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable the INFO, JSON, and YAML coder domains in policy.xml.
$ magick -version || convert -versionAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a type confusion flaw in the INFO, JSON and YAML encoders, where an internal method receives a pointer of an unexpected type when writing an image in a compressed format. An attacker who can cause such an image write can trigger a SIGABRT or SIGSEGV, crashing the process and causing denial of service.
