Impact
A local attacker can crash the application or corrupt process memory by supplying a crafted -fx expression. They need local execution rights and the system must be under memory pressure.
Root cause
A use-after-free condition occurs in the -fx option when memory allocation fails during processing.
Affected systems
ImageMagick 7.1.0-20 before 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or newer. If you cannot patch immediately, disable or restrict untrusted user input to the -fx operator.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagickAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick 7.1.0-20 before 7.1.2-32 contains a use after free vulnerability in the -fx option that occurs when a memory allocation fails during a specific operation. Attackers who can supply crafted -fx expressions under memory pressure can trigger freed memory access, causing crashes or memory corruption.
