Impact
Remote attackers can exhaust disk space and degrade service availability by submitting malicious JNG images. No authentication or user interaction is required if an application processes untrusted user uploads.
Root cause
The JNG image decoder fails to clean up temporary files created during processing when handling crafted input.
Affected systems
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade to ImageMagick 6.9.13-57, 7.1.2-32, or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable the JNG decoder in ImageMagick's policy.xml by adding <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="JNG" />.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagickAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains an incomplete cleanup flaw in the JNG decoder that fails to remove temporary files when processing crafted input. Attackers can submit crafted JNG files for processing to repeatedly leak temporary files, consuming disk space and degrading availability.
