Impact
Local attackers can bypass ImageMagick path security policies to read restricted files. They need existing local system access and the ability to run a magick script.
Root cause
A time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) symlink race allows swapping a validated path with a symlink during magick script execution.
Affected systems
ImageMagick before 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, restrict untrusted users from executing magick scripts.
$ magick -versionAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 7.1.2-32 contains a time-of-check time-of-use symlink race vulnerability that allows attackers to bypass the path security policy when executing a magick script. Attackers can swap a checked path with a symlink during script execution to read files that the security policy is meant to block.
