Impact
Local attackers with system access can degrade service or cause denial of service via memory exhaustion. They achieve this by repeatedly calling ImageMagick using the -process flag with crafted arguments.
Root cause
The -process option fails to release memory allocations when processing specific arguments, creating a memory leak.
Affected systems
ImageMagick before version 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or newer. If you cannot patch immediately, disable or sanitize user-supplied arguments to the -process command-line option in your application wrapper.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagickAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 7.1.2-32 contains a memory leak vulnerability in the -process option that allows attackers to cause unreleased memory allocations by supplying certain arguments. Attackers can repeatedly invoke the -process option with crafted arguments to gradually exhaust memory and degrade service availability.
