Impact
Remote attackers can crash processes processing images by submitting a specially crafted CMYK file. Exploitation requires the service to convert the image to PDF using JPEG2000 compression.
Root cause
A use-after-free bug occurs in the PDF writer component when handling CMYK images formatted with JPEG2000 compression.
Affected systems
ImageMagick versions prior to 6.9.13-57 and 7.x versions prior to 7.1.2-32.
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade ImageMagick to 6.9.13-57, 7.1.2-32, or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable PDF writing or block JPEG2000 compression in your ImageMagick policy.xml file.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagickAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a use after free vulnerability in the PDF writer when writing CMYK images with JPEG2000 compression. Attackers can supply a crafted CMYK image that, when written to PDF with JPEG2000 compression, causes freed memory to be reused, potentially crashing the process.
