CWE-674

Impact

Remote attackers can crash services parsing images by triggering a process denial of service. The attack requires no authentication, just submitting crafted MSL image files.

Root cause

The MSL decoder uses a flawed depth check that fails to bound recursion, leading to stack exhaustion.

Affected systems

ImageMagick versions before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L

Fix & remediation

Upgrade to ImageMagick 6.9.13-57, 7.1.2-32, or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable the MSL coder via policy.xml by adding `<policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="MSL" />`.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagick

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a stack overflow in the MSL decoder caused by an incorrect depth check that fails to limit recursion. Attackers can supply a set of crafted MSL images that exhaust the stack when one of them is read, crashing the process and causing a denial of service.
