Impact
Remote attackers can inject arbitrary XML markup into generated Cisco IP Phone files by submitting a crafted image for conversion. This allows tampering with downstream systems or devices that process the resulting CIP output without needing authentication.
Root cause
The CIP encoder writes input-derived data into Cisco IP Phone XML output without properly escaping it.
Affected systems
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-57, 7.1.2-32, or later. If updating immediately is not possible, disable the CIP coder by adding <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="CIP" /> to your policy.xml.
$ sudo sed -i '/<policymap>/a \ <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="CIP" />' /etc/ImageMagick-*/policy.xmlAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains an XML injection vulnerability in the CIP encoder, which does not properly escape input-derived data when writing Cisco IP Phone XML output. Attackers can supply a crafted file that, when converted to CIP format, injects arbitrary markup into the generated XML.
