CWE-674

Impact

Remote attackers can crash the ImageMagick process and cause a denial of service. They need to supply or control the filename of a file processed by the application.

Root cause

Uncontrolled recursion in the MVG decoder leads to stack exhaustion and a crash.

Affected systems

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L

Fix & remediation

Upgrade ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-57, 7.1.2-32, or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable the MVG coder in policy.xml by adding <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="MVG" />.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagick

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains uncontrolled recursion in the MVG decoder that can exhaust the program stack. An attacker who controls a file name processed by ImageMagick can trigger a stack overflow that crashes the process, causing a denial of service.
