Impact
Remote attackers can trigger memory leaks to degrade availability or cause out-of-memory crashes by submitting crafted images for GIF conversion. They only need the ability to send images to an endpoint that encodes them to GIF.
Root cause
The GIF encoder fails to free allocated memory when color quantization encounters an error.
Affected systems
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade ImageMagick to 6.9.13-57, 7.1.2-32, or later. If upgrading must wait, disable GIF write operations via policy.xml by setting <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="GIF" />.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade imagemagickAI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a memory leak in the GIF encoder because allocated memory is not released when color quantization fails during encoding. Attackers can supply images whose GIF conversion causes quantization to fail, leaking memory with each attempt and degrading availability.
