CWE-122

Impact

A malicious RDP clipboard peer can crash the FreeRDP client via a heap buffer overflow. The attacker needs an established session and must convince the client to process a maliciously crafted large image via the clipboard.

Root cause

The WinPR png_write_data callback fails to handle a realloc failure properly, causing an out-of-bounds memcpy during PNG conversion of a CF_DIB image.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 3.10.0 through 3.32.2

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade to a patched version beyond 3.32.2 once released. As an interim mitigation, disable clipboard redirection in your RDP client configurations.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

FreeRDP 3.10.0 through 3.32.2 contains a heap buffer overflow in the WinPR png_write_data callback that writes past the buffer after a realloc failure. A malicious RDP clipboard peer can supply a large CF_DIB image that triggers out-of-bounds memcpy during PNG conversion, causing a client crash.
