CWE-122

Impact

A malicious RDP server can crash or potentially execute code on a connecting 32-bit client. The attacker needs the user to connect to an untrusted or compromised RDP server.

Root cause

An integer truncation in license_check_stream_length allows large scopeCount values to bypass stream length checks and cause a heap-based buffer overflow.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 (specifically impacts 32-bit clients)

Fix & remediation

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or newer. As an interim workaround, avoid connecting 32-bit clients to untrusted RDP servers.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11

NVD description

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an integer truncation vulnerability in license_check_stream_length that allows a malicious RDP server to trigger a heap buffer overflow on 32-bit clients. Attackers can send a crafted SERVER_LICENSE_REQUEST with a large scopeCount that bypasses length checks, causing out-of-bounds writes leading to denial of service or remote code execution.
